Shown here are the lab measurements comparing the difference in performance of the 16-bit 130Msps LTC2208 ADC with and without dither. With dither off, the FFT on the left shows many spurs generated by the low level input signal at -20dB below full scale. Applying dither reduces the highest spur by 8dB in this example, and eliminates many of the spurs generated by the repetition of the same codes on a small region of the transfer curve. A small rise in the noise floor is visible due to the addition of the spread spectrum noise from dither leak-through.
