In summary, IRC manufactures current sensing resistors in both thick film and bulk resistive alloy technologies. Selection of which type depends mostly on the application. The thick film parts are in surface mount packages, with the 3W power chip resistors in 1225 and 2512 size packages. Because of the size of the contact area of these power resistor there is no PCB trace neck-down required. The open air resistors have an added advantage in that the hot spot is elevated away from the PCB, radiating into the air instead of on the board and nearby components. The LOB, through-hole resistor offers similar performance, but also is capable of being machine inserted.
