The LT2940 offers some unique benefits not found in traditional analog multipliers. The LT2940’s inputs are designed to handle real-world voltages and current sensing techniques. Unlike single-quadrant solutions which handle only positive, unidirectional voltage and current inputs, the LT2940 operates in all four quadrants and correctly handles bidirectional inputs such as those encountered in battery, motor control and AC applications. The 500kHz+ bandwidth enables construction of real-time servo applications that cannot be realized with slow, analog-to-digital-based solutions. The differential current sense input is also Kelvin-friendly. The differential voltage input handles up to ±8V, and permits Kelvin sensing. Its high side topology eliminates the need to split the ground path to insert a sense resistor, and operates over a 4V to 80V range covering all common, automotive, industrial, telecom and solar supply voltages. An auxiliary comparator is also included on-chip, with built-in 1.5% reference, hysteresis, and complementary open-collector outputs. The comparator is useful in limit-type applications such as alarms, forcing shutdown, activating cooling capacity or switching in additional supply capacity, and is easily configured as a simple, self-clocking PWM. The LT2940 is available in a 3mm x 3mm DFN and MSOP package.
