Here can be seen several application examples for the MPC8306 or MPC8309 processors. At the top left is the MPC8306S used in an I/O channel card. The MPC8306S card sits to the side of the main data path, providing I/O offload as well as additional interface capabilities. The triple Ethernet ports provide the interfaces to the backplane of the system, while the QUICC Engine supports connectivity to an external FPGA or DSP. The upper right and lower right block diagrams illustrate industrial control applications, such as a programmable logic controller, where the CAN controllers on the MPC8306 and MPC8309 are used to connect to a series of slave transceivers while the PCI or SDIO provides an 802.11 interface, enabling wireless communications to the factory floor. The lower left block diagram features an MPC8309-based control card for entry-level base station applications. Similar to an I/O channel card application, the triple Ethernet interfaces of the MPC8309 are being used in this example to connect to a backplane, while a TDM port provides connectivity to an external DSP or FPGA for communication.
