If an RF designer has to develop a high frequency LO, they have the choice between DRO based and PLL-based designs. DROs have the disadvantage in that the frequency can drift over time, supply voltage, and temperature. Another disadvantage of a DRO is the mechanical alignment requirement in the production environment. Additionally, an oscillator at frequencies up to 15 GHz is complicated to design. The completely integrated and RF-tested LO generators from NXP speed up the development time by simplifying or eliminating some of the design challenges.
