The ams OSRAM TMF8829 (part of the TMF882x family) represents a significant leap forward in optical distance sensing. Unlike traditional proximity sensors that rely on simple light intensity, the TMF8829 utilizes direct time-of-flight (dToF) technology. By measuring the precise time it takes for a pulse of light to travel to a target and back, it provides accurate distance measurements regardless of the object's color, reflectivity, or texture.
What sets the TMF8829 apart is its multi-zone capability. The device can divide its field of view (FoV), allowing it to detect multiple objects simultaneously or map the environment with spatial awareness.
