Digi-Key believes it is important to support developers with simple, easy-to-use design tools. We have a number of tools for online diagramming, analog/power simulation, and full PCB schematic capture and layout functionality. We wanted to take what we’ve learned from these tools and bring some of those benefits to the Internet of Things (IoT) space.
The DK IoT Studio™ is an integrated development environment (IDE) that aims to deliver “radical simplicity” to IoT developers and solution providers. It has an intuitive user interface along with drag-and-drop functionality. You simply drag sensors, processors, and other library elements and drop them onto the design panel. Making connections among these elements allows you to start collecting data and sending it to your mobile device or to the cloud.
All of this can be accomplished without any specialized programming skills. DK IoT Studio™ generates the embedded code (firmware) as well as the web and mobile application code. It is invaluable for hardware developers to go from idea to prototype in minutes without writing any of this code. The tool masks the complexity of the underlying SDKs, APIs, and drivers. By letting the tool do all the heavy lifting, even software developers can benefit from the quickly fine-tuned generated code.
The goal of providing a design tool like the DK IoT Studio™ is to provide a seamless path from the creation of an IoT solution to field deployment. The tool can also be used as a central console to monitor and manage your devices, data, and users. It offers nice device management services. You can also integrate your data into a third-party application, data warehouse, or cloud platform.
The initial release of the DK IoT Studio™ will feature Espressif's ESP32 and NXP's Rapid IoT Kit. For those of you that may not be familiar, the ESP32 is a low-cost, low-power system-on-a-chip microcontroller with integrated Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. The Rapid IoT Kit is a comprehensive, secure, and power-optimized IoT end-node solution with several integrated sensors, including a gyroscope, accelerometer, magnetometer, barometer, temperature, air quality, and ambient light. All of these are packaged in a nice little blue and gray box with a capacitive touch display. In the coming months, we plan on adding other sensors, processors, and connectivity modules from our supplier partners.
The DK IoT Studio™ is ready to help bring your IoT designs to fruition faster and easier than ever before. The tool is uniquely paired with access to Digi-Key’s inventory of the world’s largest selection of electronic components, and we are committed to offering you the strongest EDA tool portfolio to help you take your designs to the next level.
